Galina Alexandrovna Semyonova (1908-1999) was a Soviet Russian ballerina and teacher. She was born in St. Petersburg and started her ballet training at the age of 9 at the Leningrad Choreographic School. In 1925, she joined the Mariinsky Ballet (then the Kirov Ballet) and quickly rose through the ranks to become a prima ballerina in 1930.
Semyonova had a pure classical technique and was known for her graceful and expressive portrayals of classical roles. She was particularly acclaimed for her performances in Giselle, Swan Lake, and Les Sylphides. She was regarded as one of the finest ballerinas of her time and was often compared to Anna Pavlova and Galina Ulanova.
After retiring from the stage in 1952, Semyonova became a ballet teacher and worked at the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet (formerly the Leningrad Choreographic School) where she had trained as a young girl. She was known for her strict teaching methods and produced many successful dancers, including Alla Osipenko, Yulia Makhalina, and Svetlana Zakharova.
Semyonova received numerous honors throughout her career, including the title of People's Artist of the USSR in 1951. She passed away in St. Petersburg in 1999 at the age of 91.
